Counselling

In Halifax

The Student Health and Wellness Centre in Halifax offers short-term counselling for our diverse student population. Our goal is to help you manage and cope with stress and anxiety as you navigate your time here at Dal and King’s. We often make suggestions about various supports available to you on campus or in the community – such as group wellness sessions; referring you to our colleagues within the Student Health & Wellness Centre (physicians, nurses, social worker, peer support workers); or to our various support services across campus (accessibility and accommodations; career services). Ìý

Counselling at Dal emphasizes students' strengths, and sessions are geared to help you work actively in and outside of sessions to achieve specific goals. On average, most will achieve their therapeutic goals within 7-8 sessions. Ìý

We do not provide mental health assessments or formal diagnosis as these are outside the scope of our service. If you require long-term intensive treatment, we can help you find community resources to support your needs.ÌýÌý

Your first step in accessing counselling at аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½± is to book a same-day counselling appointment. You can book an appointment to access same-day counselling sessions at the Student Health & Wellness Centre in Halifax from Monday to Saturday. Ìý

During a same-day session, your counsellor will work with you to create a wellness plan, which may or may not include being booked in for a follow-up appointment, or for future sessions with another clinician for mental health counselling or LD/ADHD counselling.

Please note: Due to a high volume of request for services, same-day counselling appointments will be prioritized for students who are not presently accessing ongoing counselling. We are unable to accept a same-day counselling appointment request if you are presently accessing ongoing counselling. Ìý

Your first same-day counselling appointment acts as an intake session. The purpose of this 40-50 minute session is to:

  • Identify and understand your concerns and situationÌý

  • Discuss your options

  • Suggest strategies for coping with immediate issuesÌý

  • Create a wellness plan
