Congratulations to the Schulich School of Law’s Class of 2025! In the coming weeks, we’ll feature Q&As with graduating law students who will reflect on their time at Weldon.

Today we're talking to Andrew Weir.

Why did you want to attend the Schulich School of Law?

I was born and raised in Victoria, BC, and after going inland for my undergrad, I knew I wanted to be back in a coastal city for law school. I had visited Halifax during high school and remembered it as a remarkably beautiful place that shared many similarities to my hometown, in addition to being a very friendly city with a large population of young people.

I had also read about Schulich Law's national reputation and strong alumni base across Canada, which was very appealing at the time as I didn't know yet where I wanted to practice and wanted to keep my options open.

I also thought this would be a great way to meet new people and make some friends from other parts of this wonderful country. Ìý

In what ways were you involved with the law school community?

I wanted to get involved early on, as I didn't have a great opportunity to do the same during my undergrad due to COVID. Thankfully, the community at Weldon made it very easy.

In my first year, I served as the Law Students' Society (LSS) Section A representative as well as a 1L rep on the Sports Committee. During my second year, I stayed with the Sports Committee and served as an assistant captain, while also joining the Domus Legis Society as a 2L representative. In my third year, I had the privilege of serving as the VP of Finance for Domus and returned to the LSS as the VP of Student Life, roles which I thoroughly enjoyed.

With the help of some good friends, I was also able to serve as a director of Canada's Law Student Games, which brought more than 300 students from schools across Canada to Halifax for the 2025 Law Games in January.Ìý Ìý

What does the Weldon Tradition mean to you?

The Weldon Tradition serves as a simple reminder to strive to make the world aÌýbetter place in whatever way you can. Becoming a lawyer is an immense privilege, and for me, the Weldon Tradition means using your position to give back to individuals, as well as to society at large. Regardless of your career path, whether it is in the public or private sphere, I believe you should always take advantage of opportunities that allow you to do something good for someone else.

What is your favourite law school memory?

It's very hard to narrow it down to just one memory, but I think my favourite overall experience of law school was the evenings spent at Domus after a long week of classes. I have many fond memories of being packed, shoulder-to-shoulder, in aÌýdimly lit Halifax bar, laughing and chatting with my classmates about the highs and lows of law school. It was a fantastic way to make new friends, get advice on classes and recruit from upper years, and build on the collegial community Schulich Law prides itself on.Ìý

What will you miss most about Schulich Law?

I will miss coming to school with my friends each day and learning from passionate and world-class professors and practitioners.

I imagine most people – myself included – go to law school with pre-conceived notions of what it may entail: mountains of readings, cold-calling professors, and hyper-competitive classmates vying for the few coveted As in each class.

And while there was enough reading to make most people question their career choice, it was the people I was fortunate enough to go through law school with that made the last three years the most rewarding and enriching time of my life. The Schulich School of Law's extremely collaborative and collegial atmosphere meant that my challenges paled in comparison to the joy and friendship that I derived.

What are your post-graduation plans?

I am moving to Vancouver with my lovely partner to begin work at a firm downtown, where I hope to enjoy a rewarding, balanced, and successful career.

I will also be keeping a keen eye on where my friends and fellow alumni go in life, as they are undoubtably the most intelligent, driven, and compassionate group of individuals I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
